What We Do

Our organization and the services we offer are in alignment with Habitat for Humanity’s mission of providing everyone with a decent place to live. Some of our programs are available year-round, and some are available as funding permits.

Home Ownership & Home Repair

The availability of our home ownership and home repair programs is limited by funding, manpower and demand. We are not accepting applications nor home repair applications at this time. Please check this website and refer to our Facebook page for up-to-date news and information about the services Habitat for Humanity EVLA is offering to our community.

Habitat for Humanity offers a “hands up,” not a “hand out.” Work is done primarily by volunteers, licensed contractors and by the applicant him/herself (“sweat equity”). The application process requires proof that the home or land owner is able to repay a no-interest loan for the home or repair work performed by Habitat for Humanity.

2023 Home Build

Habitat for Humanity of Española & Los Alamos is currently accepting applications from families and individuals interested in owning a new Habitat home. Applicant families must own their own land in within an approximate 10-mile radius of Española or Los Alamos, exhibit a need for a new home and fit within the income guidelines indicated below. If you are in need of decent, affordable housing and think you may qualify for a Habitat home, stop by our administrative office in the Thrift Shop located at 726 N. Riverside Drive in Española and request an application.

Building Code Compliance

It is the policy of Habitat for Humanity of Española & Los Alamos to perform all construction and repair in compliance with U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requirements. We hire local, licensed contractors to perform construction and repairs in compliance with the following building requirements: the “International Residential Code” (IRC 2009), the “Universal Plumbing Code” (UPC 2012) and the “Universal Mechanical Code” (UMC 2015), the “National Electrical Code” (NEC 2002), the “New Mexico Building Code” (CID), and the “New Mexico Manufactured Housing Code” (NMMHD). In the event the New Mexico Construction Industries Division adopts additional codes, the requirements of those newly adopted codes shall be adhered to as well.

A Brush with Kindness

A Brush with Kindness is an ongoing exterior home preservation program that offers painting, yardwork, landscaping and minor repair services to eligible homeowners so that they can continue to live in safe, decent homes for years to come. We’d like to help homeowners take pride in their homes!

How does the program work?

  • We select partner families based on income, need and willingness to partner.
  • We use volunteer labor and donated materials to keep costs low and take no profit for our services.
  • A no-interest loan is made to the homeowner to cover the cost of the project if there is a significant amount of materials or services needed. Payments are placed in a revolving fund to help A Brush with Kindness serve others in need. In most cases, only a $20 fee is requested of the homeowner to haul waste.
  • The program would not be possible without the generosity of Valspar, the co-founder and underwriter of the A Brush with Kindness program.
